Loving You 喜欢你

A friend recently introduced me to an old but beautiful Mongolian folk song. I don’t speak Mongolian, so she sent me the Cantonese cover for it. It’s called 喜欢你 Loving You. The Chinese dialect of Cantonese is my first language. So this version in my mother tongue made it extra special for me. I took the liberty of translating it to English so that all my readers could enjoy it too. I hope you like it.

Loving You 2

Loving You

While the evening drizzle is busy dancing with the wind on the streets
I wipe off the rain, only to see the vast vainness above my feet
Yes, that lonely light — my memory, my misery
It brings back lots of history
I see your winsome face, like distant art
Now my love, do you see the truth in my heart?

I love you, your alluring eyes, your radiant smiles
Can I touch your pretty face again?
Can we talk dreams, you and I, hand in hand, like happy old clams?
Emotional like a true man, stubborn like an arctic stone
I wanted to love you and at the same time be left alone
I was wrong, my love
Do you now see the truth in my heart?

I love you, your alluring eyes, your radiant smiles
Can I touch your pretty face again?
Can we talk dreams, you and I, hand in hand, like happy old clams?
I wander around in the shivering cold night, following you in my mind’s eye
I wanted to make it on my own, to become somebody
I didn’t care about your feelings, your pains, and I devolved into a noddy

I love you, your alluring eyes, your radiant smiles
Can I touch your pretty face again?
Can we talk dreams, you and I, hand in hand
Like a pair of ocean clams*?
Loving you, loving you….

Loving You

* Clams were not part of the original lyrics. I put them in for idiomatic fun for the Englophones.
