Beauty and the beasts

The beautiful man.

One night in October, 2017, Johnny Bobbitt came to Kate McClure’s rescue on the side of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia. She had run out of gas. Bobbitt told her to lock the doors to keep her safe. He then walked to a service station and spent $20 of his own money to buy her a can of gas. Bobbitt was a homeless veteran and that was all the money he had on him.

McClure and her boyfriend Mark D’Amico tried to repay the Good Samaritan. They gave him food and some money. Then an idea to really help Bobbitt get back on his feet hit them. They started a fund-raiser on GoFundMe. They had hoped to raise $100,000 for Bobbitt.

According to Wikipedia, “GoFundMe is a for-profit crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses. From 2010 to 2017, over $5 billion was raised on the platform for over two million individual campaigns and 50 million donors.”

Their campaign raised more than $402,000 from more than 14,000 donors.

The beastly act.

At this writing, Bobbitt claims he has not seen a dime of that $402,000. At night, he still sleeps under a freeway bridge. He spends his days doing exactly what he was doing when McClure’s car broke down in front of him many months ago: panhandling.

The GoFundMe cash, Bobbitt told reporters, had been stolen and squandered by McClure and D’Amico on vacations, a luxury car other personal items.

McClure and D’Amico gave a different version of what transpired. They claimed that although they did not hand over any cash to Bobbitt, they had bought him a home, two used cars, a camper, a TV, a laptop and two cell phones. They said that they Johnny Bobbitt, Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure decided not to give Bobbitt any cash because that would be equivalent to buying him more drugs. Bobbitt admitted he is an addict.

As of now, Mr. Bobbitt, through his lawyer, has sued McClure and D’Amico in court. The latest is that there is no money left in McClure and D’Amico’s account to be transferred to Mr. Bobbitt.

The takeaway.

We have to be careful here. While the case waits to be litigated, McClure and D’Amico are presumed innocent, not criminals. Their alleged theft of donation money has yet to be proven. Even with the benefit of the doubt, they look pretty bad though, don’t they?
