Doughnuts are sweet, so are neighbors

John and Stella Chan came to the US from Cambodia in the 1970s. They bought and operated a doughnut shop called Donut City in Seal Beach, California. Since then the fresh sweetness of their doughnuts and the smiles of the husband and wife have made it a favorite breakfast place for a large following of locals.

Lately the regulars noticed that Stella hadn’t been there for a few days. So they asked John and found out that she had an aneurism, was hospitalized, and now recovering in a nursing home. One customer asked for John’s permission to do a GoFundMe campaign to help them with their finance. He declined. So that customer started a grassroots effort on his own. He contacted the local news media and told everybody that one of the owners of their favorite doughnut shop was ill, and that if they could come early every day to buy all the doughnuts from John, he could go and keep Stella company the rest of the day.

Word spread fast. So were the neighbors’ actions. They came as early as 4:30 in the morning, and bought the sweet fried dough by the dozens. On most days the doughnuts would be gone by 8:30. John would then clean up the shop and go to see Stella.

I asked you a couple of weeks ago if you think some people are born evil. Some of you wrote back and assured me that it was the absolute truth. I am still struggling with that unpleasant thought. Regardless, now I know some people are sweet angels.
