The Engineer and the Guitarist: Part I

John owned an apartment in a city called Vallejo, California. During the three years he lived there he
befriended a neighbor called Ted. Soon after they met, Ted invited John to a small party at Ted’s
apartment. For entertainment, Ted sang the following song to the guests that evening.

Engineer and the GuitaristI Never Know

I never know
How far my life would go
The rainbow in the sky
How pretty it must have looked in my
parents’eyes

I never know
What tomorrow holds
The radiance of the stars
How they highlight
The quiet secrets of the night

I never know
How tall my children are going to grow
Whether their paths may be roses or dandelions
With the pains inherited from parted parents

I never know
How sad my face looks
How people may see it like an empty book

I never know
How sad my face looks
How people may see it like an empty book
I never know

Ted wrote the song. It was obvious that he was not living the happiest stage of his life. But it was sad and lovely at the same time as he played it on his Spanish guitar.
