My sister-in-law Flora sent me the story of 于娟 Yu Juan the other day. Yu died of breast cancer at the young age of 32. She would have been just another cancer victim but for the facts that she grew up in a blue-collar family, went on to obtain a Ph. D. in Sociology, became a professor in a prestigious Chinese university, was a wife, a mother, and started a daily blog called 活着就是王道 (my rough translation: to live is supreme) a few months before she succumbed to the waiting death.
I didn’t know Yu. But I admire her courage and I thank her for the legacy she bequeathed to the human race. She knew she was dying. She chose to live the vestige of her life not in misery, but in love – in love of her husband, in love of her child, her parents, those around her and beyond. Stories of people like her give us joy, pain and, most important of all, a certain purpose as to why we are here.
| Ms.Yu, this song is for you. |
The day I was born I knew I wanted everything I wanted Nobel’s prize I wanted Rockefeller’s wealth and power I wanted all the vices of life and more |
Then cancer comes at night Forget mammon’s desires now Forget the budding career Forget the growing bank account Forget everything I ever wanted |
In the beginning of time No, there was nothing No guaranteed health for sure No voiding of everyday vexations No doubt it’s life |
Yu Juan Such a moving story She’s got the will of steel She tells us to Live, live, live To live is supreme In this wide wide world How many could look death in the eye Like Yu Juan did? |
She tells us to Live, live, live To live is supreme Live and love the people around you In this wide wide world How many could love others Like Yu Juan did? |
